Abstract
Sterols were extracted from colon bacilli by 8 hrs. of petrol ether-heat, and by chloroform, extraction; not by acetone or petrol ether at room temp. The difficulty in extraction is not due to a more or less resistant bacterial envelope; the ease with which sterols were extracted by acetone from human tubercle bacilli when grown on saponine containing medium is attributed less to an injury of the acid fast envelope than to a medium induced change in the chemical combination within the cell.
