Impulse Response of Active Coupled Wave Systems

Abstract
The impulse response of active contraflow (backward) two‐wave systems of infinite and finite lengths are obtained. The infinite system without loss exhibits a nonconvective instability. With sufficient loss in one wave this instability becomes convective and with sufficient loss in both waves the system becomes stable. The impulse response to the finite system is obtained in two forms. One of these is in terms of the discrete normal modes of the system, the other is in terms of repeated reflections at the two ends of the system. The interesting connection between this latter method and the method of images is discussed.
