40—Stress-Induced Fissures in Regenerated Cellulose and Other Polymer Fibres

Abstract
The transverse lines that become apparent in regenerated cellulose fibres as a result of stress are proved to be a manifestation of fissures in the structure. The approximate form and dimensions of the fissures have been studied by optical and electron microscopy, and the evidence is considered in relation to molecular network theory. Fibres from other polymers, e.g., polyamide, polyester, and polyolefin fibres, show similar transverse fissures when stressed, and common features of fine structure are presumed to be present.
