ACUTE LEUKEMIA AND PREGNANCY

Abstract
Although the reported instances of concurrent acute leukemia and pregnancy are few we have encountered such patients in the past 5 years. The cases are presented and discussed in detail. The character of the problem is discussed and a rationale for management is presented. Three maternal deaths before term, 4 deaths after delivery and one 5-year survival is recorded. Five living healthy babies (all female) have resulted from these pregnancies. We conclude that in addition to supportive measures presently available, anti-leukemia agents can be employed during pregnancy to benefit both mother and fetus. Pregnancy, per se, does not have a deleterious effect on the course of acute leukemia. The adjuvant use of steroids is recommended where bleeding or toxicity are significant features. The growing recognition of hypofibrino-ginemia in such cases warrants investigation and proper management in every case.
