THE ORIGIN OF THE DIABETOGENIC HORMONE IN THE DOGFISH

Abstract
The resting blood sugar level and the severity of pancreatic diabetes are not influenced by fluctuations in in-termedin secretion in the dogfish, Mustelus canis. Complete hypophysectomy is followed by the appearance of hypo-glycemia at the 4th day following the operation, a response which is also produced by the removal of the ant. lobe alone. Removal of the neurointermediate lobe does not affect the resting blood sugar level. Complete hypophysectomy ameliorates the severity of pancreatic diabetes, as does the removal of the ant. lobe alone. The removal of the neurointermediate lobe alone does not influence pancreatic diabetes. Intermedin and the diabetogenic hormones of the pituitary of the dogfish are evidently not identical.
