THE RELATION OF BILE TO THE SECRETION OF PANCREATIC JUICE

Abstract

Total biliary and pancreatic fistulae were prepared in each of 2 dogs. The volume of pancreatic juice and of bile secreted during 6 days under standard diet when both secretions were returned to the stomach was determined and compared with the volumes secreted when only the pancreatic juice was returned. The complete removal of bile from the intestinal tract caused a distinct decrease in the volume of bile secreted but had no effect on the volume of pancreatic juice. It is concluded that in the dog at least the presence of bile in the duodenum cannot be considered essential for the secretion of pancreatic juice.
