HENCH and Darnall1 state that the first report of gouty involvement of the heart was by Bence-Jones in 1856, and allude to 4 additional cases and mention a fifth case of their own. Their patient had complete heart block attributed to a tophus in the conduction system at autopsy. References have been found to another 6 cases, bringing the number of reported cases of gout of the heart to a total of 11.2 3 4 5 Thus, gouty involvement of the heart may be considered a rare entity.
