Abstract
Multiplier group approach has been used to analyse the normal vibrations of the rutile structure. The irreducible representations at various critical points in the Brillouin zone of the crystal are listed. The basis vectors for the stud of the lattice vibrations have been derived using the projection operator technique and are tabulated. The general form of the atomic displacements at the critical points has been discussed. Keywords
