Chronic effects of jet engine noise on the structure and function of the cochlear apparatus.

Abstract

Using guinea pigs given a 15 minute exposure to jet engine noise in excess of 140 db, hearing loss was measured 6 to 8 weeks after exposure. Group loss was approx. 34 db. Histological study showed cochlear degeneration, maximal near the base, but spreading from the middle.
