Field experiment of 10 Gbit/s, 360 km transmission through embedded standard (non-DSF) fibre cables

Abstract
The authors have demonstrated, for the first time, 10 Gbit/s transmission over 360 km of embedded standard fibre cables. During the five month long field experiment, the 1.55 µm, 10 Gbit/s IM/DD system showed long term ‘error free’ transmission (less than 10-16 BER) with an optical repeater spacing of 120 km (33 dB repeater span loss).
