Mechanism of Alternating Copolymerization of Vinyl Acetate and Maleic Anhydride

Abstract
Vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride are known to give 1:1 alternating copolymerization regardless of the monomer feed composition. The existence of a charge transfer complex between the comonomers has been shown and its equilibrium constant determined. The mechanism has been discussed, starting from a study of the copolymerization rate when varying the solvent, the temperature, and the concentration of comonomers.
