The backcross method enables the plant breeder to utilize fundamental genetical principles to set up a scientific plant-breeding program from which he can predict in advance the nature of the variety which he will breed. This method is being used by the author and his associates to produce disease and insect resistant varieties of cereals to replace those now in use in California.
