Abstract
Experimental data on the heat generated during torsional oscillations of annealedaluminum rods are presented. These results demonstrate the necessity of including coupling between the temperature field and the deviatoric components of strain when the material is deformed beyond the linear elastic region. The experiments are of sufficient duration that an approximate balance of the heat generation and the losses by conduction is finally reached. Temperatures in excess of five hundred degrees (F) are observed. It is also found that heat is generated during the loading parts of the cycle but that none is created when the material is unloading.
