Abstract
A detailed knowledge of the extent and nature of chromosome variations in the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line is emphasized for the purposes of understanding such genetic phenomena as mutation, regulation, recombination and segregation. Important points discussed include linkage analysis, functional hemizygosity and cell lineage. The significance of karytopic evaluation of all somatic cells used for genetic studies and the need for increased efforts by somatic cell genetists to prevent excessive genetic drift is underscored. Keywords
