High-statistics measurement of the string tension in SU(3) lattice gauge theory

Abstract
A high-statistics measurement of the string tension σ has been performed for SU(3) lattice gauge theory, paying particular attention to errors involved in the analysis, in the interval β=6g02=4.87.0 on 64, 84, and 104 lattices. A marked structure has been found in the string tension at β=5.35.4. Beyond β=5.5, our data are consistent with scaling with the ratio ΛLσ=(7.9±0.5)×103, a value larger than those previously reported. The approach to scaling is abrupt and from above, in contrast to the SU(2) case.
