Performance of Large Area Scintillation Counters

Abstract
The light collection in large plastic and liquid scintillation counters is analysed and it is shown that it is more efficient for the photomultiplier to be in optical contact with one side of the phosphor than to be viewed from above. Experimental results obtained with a large plastic scintillation counter support this conclusion, as does a survey of other published results. The uniformity of response is about equally good for the two types of counter.
