Automated Micromeasurement of Urea Using Urease and the Berthelot Reaction

Abstract
The method described is based on Kaplan's modification of the Chaney and Marbach procedure: urea is hydrolyzed by urease to form ammonia, which is reacted with alkaline hypochlorite and phenol (Berthelot reaction). The procedure is rapid, precise, sensitive, specific, and simple. Dialysis is unnecessary and only 0.05 ml. of sample is required. An unmodified AutoAnalyzer is used; the manifold is compatible with a micromethod for glucose using o-toluidine.
