Lethal Effects of Tannic Acid in the Barium Enema

Abstract
Three fatalities, all in children, from hepatic necrosis due to the use of tannic acid in Ba enema examinations are presented. Tannic acid was demonstrated in the liver of 1 patient. Experimental studies in albino rats and dogs revealed the absorption of tannic acid from the intact colon. Plasma levels of tannic acid were measured and the resultant microscopic changes of hepatic injury are shown.
