Abstract
A theory describing the interactions of an optically pumped target with an atomically polarizable buffer material is developed. Calculations indicate that a substantial increase in both target polarization and polarized target density can be achieved by using a polarizable buffer material. This target technique is potentially useful for optical pumping of buffer materials for which laser power is either insufficient or unavailable. Keywords
