Some Acoustic and Perceptual Factors in Acute-Laryngitic Hoarseness

Abstract

Recordings were made of 15 subjects having acute laryngitis and also after the laryngitis had subsided. These recordings were subjected to perceptual evaluation and fundamental frequency analysis. It is suggested that acute laryngitic hoarseness is related to perception of breathiness, voice aberrations and voice break, restricted frequency range, and a small number of frequency breaks. Acute laryngitic hoarseness does not appear to be characterized by lowered pitch or by harshness.
