Abstract
The effect of 8 penicillins [antibiotics] on the mucociliary activity of rabbit trachea was tested in vitro. Carbenicillin and ampicillin had a minor inhibitory effect. Penicillin G and V and phenethicillin were a little more ciliestatic. Propicillin, cloxacillin and dicloxacillin were most toxic. The mucociliary toxicity increased with increasing lipophilicity of the penicillins and correlated well with their known neurotoxic in vivo effects. Keywords
