Bombardment of Copper with Tritons

Abstract

Tritons have been accelerated to 6.5 Mev in a cyclotron and made to bombard stacks of copper foils. Among the triton induced reactions, the following have been identified: ${\mathrm{Cu}}^{63}\mathrm{}(t,d)\mathrm{}{\mathrm{Cu}}^{64}$ (12.9 hours), ${\mathrm{Cu}}^{63}\mathrm{}(t,n)\mathrm{}{\mathrm{Zn}}^{65}$ (250 days), ${\mathrm{Cu}}^{65}(t,{\mathrm{He}}^3){\mathrm{Ni}}^{65}$ (2.6 hours), and ${\mathrm{Cu}}^{65}\mathrm{}(t,p)\mathrm{}{\mathrm{Cu}}^{67}$ (2.44 days) with relative cross sections for the various reactions as 11:64:6:10, respectively. The Oppenheimer-Phillips process appears to be operative in case of tritons of this order of energy.
