STUDIES ON SARCINA VENTRICULI III

Abstract
Production of cellulose is demonstrated, and a procedure for the purification of cellulose from packets of S. ventriculi EC-1 is described. Electron microscope observations combined with chemical methods indicate that cellulose constitutes either totally or in great part the cementing material which binds the cells together into large packets. This cellulose has a fibrous structure, and is not present in the cell wall. The average cell diameter of the cellulose-producing strain EC-1 is 2.1 [mu].
