Jitter and Shimmer Differences among Sustained Vowel Phonations

Abstract

This study investigated jitter and shimmer differences among eight English vowels recorded through a miniature accelerometer placed on the throat. Statistical tests indicated no significant differences in either jitter or shimmer among the eight vowels. An average jitter value of .75% and a shimmer value of .17 dB were obtained across the eight vowels and 20 subjects.
