Abstract
Collision spectroscopy of the Mg+-rare-gas systems has shown very different behaviour for Mg+-Ne compared with the other systems. This finding is discussed in the framework of the electron-promotion model. The importance of the quasi-u,g symmetry is pointed out and found to be responsible for the selectivity of the excitation processes. Keywords
