Experimental ModelsSimulation of human disease in laboratory animals is difficult when it is necessary to induce an intestinal infection lasting for several days. Infection can be produced by feeding of very large numbers of organisms, but a relevant clinical syndrome may not result. Starvation, opiates and streptomycin pretreatment have been used singly and in combination to compensate for the natural resistance of animals such as guinea pigs, rats and mice to challenge with salmonellae,¹²⁰ shigellae²⁴ and other organisms.
