An Investigation of the Phenylmethylsilicone Stationary Phases and Their Use in Mixed Bed Columns

Abstract
The specific retention volumes and thermodynamic solution parameters of 10 solutes on 8 phenylmethylsilicone polymer liquid phases have been measured at 66, 100, and 150°C. It is shown that the specific retention volumes of the polar and aromatic solutes do not increase significantly with the degree of phenyl substitution in the polymers. The maximum values of the specific retention volumes and other solution parameters were observed on OV-11 or OV-17 for all polar or aromatic solutes. The same parameters decreased continuously with the degree of phenyl substitution of the polymers for n-alkane solutes. This accounts for the large variation in the retention dispersion, δl, observed by others for the polar solutes on the phenylmethylsilicone polymers.
