Metabolism of normal and tumour tissue

Abstract
IX. With kidney, spleen, Jensen rat sarcoma and embryo (chick, rat) aerobic ammonia formation was large in absence of sugar, but was arrested by glucose except with kidney where it persisted at a reduced value. In brain, retina, and testis the amount of ammonia produced was small but increased in the absence of glucose or fructose. The protein-sparing action of glucose and fructose was demonstrated with a variety of tissues. The urea formed by 5-day chick embryo and by Jensen rat sarcoma was so small that it had little effect on R. Q. measurements.[long dash]X. The inhibitory effect of lactates on the anaerobic glucolysis of brain, testis and tumor was variable. Z-lactate was about 1/2 as effective as natural d-lactate. After 20 min. preliminary anaerobic substrate-deprivation the glucolysis of testis, spleen, rat yolk-sac and tumors was almost complete; that of the brain was about 12% of the normal value. The presence of small quantities of pyruvate tended to keep the glycolysis of tissue at its maximum value.
