Manager Impact on Retention of Hospital Staff

Abstract
The impact of middle managers on retention of 71 hospital professional was examined in this prospective study. Price and Mueller's 1981 model of turn-over was expanded to include the leadership characteristics of middle managers. In Part 1, research design, methods, and descriptive results are presented. Data on predictor variables were obtained by two questionnaires comprised of established instruments. Retention data then were collected for 6 months. Part 2 of this series, the impact of the manager and recommendations for improving retention, will be presented in the April issue.
