Abstract
Bismuth subgallate powder is taken orally to help control odour and consistency of the stool in patients with colostomy or ileostomy. The Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee of the Australian Drug Evaluation Committee has received reports of a neurological syndrome in patients receiving this drug characterized by malaise, lassitude and dysaesthesiae, progressing to loss of memory, tremor and impaired coordination. Signs and symptoms are reversible when therapy is stopped. The explanation for this syndrome remains unclear. Keywords
