Abstract
A physical model of the generation of picosecond pulses from a laser is developed from self‐consistent equations for cases in which a modulator or a nonlinear element is inserted in the laser cavity. Pulse widths are obtained by consideration of the variances of the pulse, modulator, and filter functions. An analytic solution for the pulse is obtained for a Lorentzian line shape and arbitrary amplitude‐modulation waveform. Keywords
