Thermoluminescence of ?-irradiated solutions of aromatic compounds in rigid organic glasses

Abstract
The luminescence of γ-irradiated solutions of aromatic compounds in aliphatic hydrocarbon glasses has been studied during and after irradiation at 77°K, during stimulation by infra-red radiation at 77°K and on subsequent warming (thermoluminescence). Naphthalene solutions have been studied in detail; the relative intensities of its fluorescence and phosphorescence vary considerably. The most prominent feature of the thermoluminescence of toluene is emission from the benzyl radical, but this is not observed at 77°K. Trapped ions and electrons have been detected by absorption spectroscopy and the luminescences are ascribed to their recombination.
