Inactivation of Vacuolating Virus (SV40) by Formaldehyde

Abstract
Inactivation of the vacuolating virus with 1:4000 formaldehyde solution USP followed a biphasic curve with an initial drop and a levelling off after 40 hours at 37[degree]C, leaving a residual fraction of virus which resisted further inactivation for the remainder of the 14 day heating period. Viable vacuolating virus was detected in some formalinized poliomyelitis and adenovirus vaccines.
