Abstract
This paper presents a computation of the efficiency of excitation of the state B 2Σu+ in N2+, which is responsible for radiation in the 3914‐Å band, by energetic electrons which are slowing down in a thick target. The computed efficiency includes corrections for the Auger effect. In addition, the corresponding fluorescent efficiency of soft x rays is estimated. The calculations appear to be in good agreement with the limited experimental data available. The method of computation is applicable to the treatment of other energy‐exchange phenomena associated with the stopping of electrons in thick targets. Keywords
