Esophageal Exfoliative Cytology

Abstract
Esophageal exfoliative cytology was performed in 197 patients. Nine of these patients were excluded from the study because their final diagnosis is unknown and four others were excluded because the examination was inadequate and could not be repeated. Repeat examinations were required in 25 cases. Esophageal cytology is the most accurate method of diagnosing esophageal cancer short of operation. It is of greater value in excluding malignancy in patients with benign esophageal disease. In our experience it was often greater assistance than the more discomforting technique of esophagoscopy. Esophageal exfoliative cytology is applicable for widespread use and should become a routine diagnostic procedure for patients with esophageal lesions.
