A study of kinking and buckling in zinc single crystals

Abstract
Single crystals of zinc have been deformed in compression along directions close to 〈1·00〉 and 〈11·0〉. High-voltage electron microscopy has been used to identify the dislocations in the deformed crystals. Crystals which deform by kinking, without significant prior plastic deformation, contain dislocations of b = ⅓〈11·0〉 only, and crystals which plastically buckle (or which kink after significant strain) contain dislocations of b = ⅓〈11·0〉, ⅓〈11·3〉 and [0001]. The factors governing the deformation behaviour are discussed in terms of geometrical softening of the 〈1120〉 (0001) slip systems.
