Reaction to Walter Pryzwansky's Presidential Address to the American Psychological Association on school consultation.

Abstract

My reaction to Walt Pryzwansky's address and subsequent article centers on the importance of viewing consultation as being both scientific and artful. I agree with Pryzwansky that studying differences in how expert and novice consultants behave is critical to understanding the consultation process. Reactions are provided to three areas addressed by Pryzwansky: (a) distinguishing between experts and novices, (b) differentiating the effects of a strong experiential knowledge base and a problem-solving knowledge base, and (c) considering how to train novices to become experts by using direct illustration of skills, by developing performance critiera, and by sequencing preparatory activities to attain response automaticity in consultants.
