Abstract
A method of recording pressures from the rectum and anal sphincters is described that has helped eliminate ambiguities in diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease, thereby facilitating definitive treatment. Rectal manometry is also helping to explain the mechanisms of continence and has provided a useful tool for differentiating whether smooth or striated muscle is primarily involved in a number of other disease states.
