Abstract
D-alanine, but not L-alanine, competitively reverses the inhibitory action of cycloserine on Streptococcus faecalis cells that are synthesizing cell wall substance. Both cycloserine and penicillin can inhibit cells that are not increasing in size but that are making cell wall substance. However, they differ in their mode of action.
