A SYNDROME CHARACTERIZED BY ESTROGENIC INSUFFICIENCY, GALACTORRHEA AND DECREASED URINARY• GONADOTROPIN*

Abstract
Four patients were studied with a syndrome characterized by galactorrhea, amenorrhea and low values of urinary gonadotropins. The patients" ages fell between 18 and 36 yrs. and the symptomatology had no relation with pregnancy. The galactorrhea varied from only a few drops obtained by mammary pressure to a spontaneous secretion. The breasts were normal in appearance, as was the form and pigmentation of the areolae and nipples. The amenorrhea was primary in one of the patients and secondary in the others. The uterus was of normal size in one, and of reduced volume in the others. Pubic and axillary hair developed normally in all 4. The urinary and vaginal sediments smears showed a high degree of hypoestrogenism. The gonadotropin values were always below 6 m.U./24 hrs. in repeated detns. The differential diagnosis is presented with the Chiari-Frommel syndrome, Simmond"s disease and acromegalia. The syndrome appears to be of hypophyseal origin.
