The Elderly Alcoholic

Abstract
A review of the literature concerning the extent of the problem of alcoholism among the elderly is presented. Evidence from the literature indicates that the problem is significant; one household survey found that the highest prevalence rate of alcoholism was among elderly widowers. Treatment approaches for managing elderly alcoholics indicate good prognosis for such patients. The use of alcohol in nursing homes as a therapeutic agent has dangers, including its potential to become an addiction and the possibility of adverse reactions among elderly people, who may be more susceptible to alcohol's mood-changing properties.
