Abstract
ESR spectra of gadolinium ions dissolved in polycrystalline cubic metallic host systems have been calculated in the exchange-narrowed region. By comparison with the experimental results for Gd in polycrystalline samples of the intermetallic compounds ScIr, LuIr and ScRh it was possible to deduce the magnitude and sign of the crystal field constants b4 of Gd.Keywords
