Hidden alcoholism is the result of an interactional process involving both hiders (alcoholics) and seekers (persons who label and take action against alcoholics). Definitions of alcoholism and sanctions against alcoholics vary with the drinking codes of different cultural groups. Generally, there is public tolerance of alcoholics of low social status while hiders and seekers both collaborate to keep the higher social-status alcoholic concealed.
