Abstract
The particle-plus-rotor model has been solved for some weakly and moderately deformed odd- nuclei. Some very characteristic regularities are expected to occur for the high-spin states coming from high- orbitals, and these depend strongly on the sign of . Application to some Au, Hg, and Tl nuclei shows surprising agreement, and indicates oblate shapes for these states in all these nuclei. Under certain conditions, a new coupling scheme is realized where the particle angular momentum, , is quantized along the rotation axis rather than the symmetry axis.
