Radiation from an Electric Dipole Immersed in a Lossy Anisotropic Plasma

Abstract
The radiation characteristics of an electric dipole immersed in an unbounded, homogeneous anisotropic plasma are investigated for the case in which an infinitely strong static field is applied to the plasma, ions are stationary and collision effects are taken into account. Under an infinite d.c. magnetic field directed along the 2-coordinate axis, the dielectric tensor is complex and diagonal, characterizing then a dissi-pative uniaxially anisotropic medium. Under these assumptions the problem is solved for the cases in which the electric dipole is respectively parallel and perpendicular to the z-axis. In both cases far-field expressions are derived from that of the arbitrarily oriented dipole ease. It is noted that the presence of small losses by collisions in the plasma may have appreciable effects on the radiation patterns. Besides the reduction in gain due to collisional damping, the radiation peaks are shown to be shifted when small collision effects are introduced.
