THE ACUTE CALCIFICATION OF TRAUMATIZED MUSCLE, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO ACUTE POST-TRAUMATIC RENAL INSUFFICIENCY 1

Abstract
Experiments were performed in dogs to clarify the clinical observation that Ca infused into anuric patients escapes from the plasma more rapidly when damaged muscle is present. Using radioactive and standard chemical techniques it was found that damaged dog muscle doubled its Ca content in 6 hours; the quantity of Ca in damaged muscle was increased by an average of more than tenfold in enphrectomized dogs. Administration of acid, alkali, phosphate, or parathyroid extract to non-nephrectomized dogs failed to reproduce the massive deposition of Ca observed in the nephrectomized dogs.
