THE EFFECT OF AERATION ON GROWTH OF THE TOMATO IN NUTRIENT SOLUTION

Abstract
Studies were made of the effects of varying amounts of aeration of the nutrient solution, as related to (1), fruit production, (2), vegetative growth of the tomato. Aeration by natural diffusion had no significant effect. Supplying the nutrient medium with 2.5 ml. of air per plant per min. greatly increased total fruit production and speed of ripe fruit production. Increasing the rate of aeration resulted only in increased leaf and stem production. Vegetative growth was proportional to the rate of aeration, up to 250 ml. of air per plant per min. which was the upper limit of the experiment.
