AGAR DIFFUSION STUDIES ON SPECIES SPECIFICITY OF BALANTIDIUM COLI, B CAVIAE AND B WENRICHI

Abstract
The Ouchterlony technique has been applied to three species of parasitic ciliates: Balantidium coli, B. caviae and B. wenrichi. Species specificity has been demonstrated by the occurrence of precipitation bands peculiar to B. coli and B. caviae, while B. wenrichi was distinguished by its limited reactivity with the antisera of the other two species. B. coli and B. caviae are shown to be immunologically more closely related to each other than to B. wenrichi. The antigenic properties of B. coli and B. caviae appear more complex than in B. wenrichi.
