Abstract
2-Mercaptobenzoic acid was reduced, alkylated on sulfur atom with various α-halocarbonyl derivatives and then oxidized to 2-thioalkoxybenzaldehydes which underwent intramolecular condensation to give 2-carbonylbenzo[b]thiophenes in good yields. Keywords
