In oceanic and coastal water samples, half or more of the measured ATP may be of animal origin because metazoans have C/ATP ratios materially lower than the value of 250 usually applied in marine work, and because an appreciable metazoan biomass may remain in small samples after straining through a 0.2-mm mesh. The animals may thus lead to considerable overestimates of plankton biomass from ATP measurements.
